The school is open to all PhD students, post-docs and permanent researchers interested in this theme and wishing to get involved in a collaborative work. Please note that registration is open until 15 September 2021!

The Academy "Complex Systems" organizes every autumn a school on a specific topic chosen for its scope and topicality. The objective is to bring together world-renowned experts and young researchers, from diverse backgrounds, to exchange ideas and promote new developments in complex systems research.

For this 1st edition, the autumn 2021 programme is dedicated to mobile active matter. More precisely, it concerns micro-natation, locomotion in a complex fluid, or mechanical aspects of self-propulsion, and emerging collective behaviour. The 2021 programme also deals with applications of machine learning and artificial intelligence to model, optimise and control the movement strategies of self-propelled entities, from bacteria to micro robots.

The autumn 2021 programme includes courses, synthesis lectures and the opportunity to develop a collaborative project.

Target audience

The school is open to all PhD students, post-docs and permanent researchers interested in mobile active matter and wishing to get involved in collaborative work in one of the following themes :

  • Swimming in a complex environment - micro-swimming;
  • Collective motion;
  • Machine learning applied to active particles.

PhD students and post-doctoral researchers will have to choose one of these three main themes in order to be assigned to a research project. It is expected that the preliminary results obtained in these research projects will be sufficiently important and novel to be published.

Permanent researchers working in the field of mobile active matter are invited to attend the School's courses and conferences, and are invited to propose a research project in one of the main themes in order to be a supervisor of this project during the School's project sessions.

Registration is open until 15 September 2021.

Due to the health situation, the school will take place both virtually and on-site. The two locations where the school is organised, Nice and Fréjus, are equipped with conference rooms allowing the school to be followed in hybrid mode. The choice to come on site or to follow the school virtually is free for all participants but it must be specified in the registration forms.

Financial support for doctoral students and post-doctoral researchers

In order to contribute to the expenses of the doctoral and post-doctoral students, the organising committee has decided to financially support 10 doctoral or post-doctoral students by allocating them a grant of 800 € each and by taking charge of the accommodation costs at Villa Clythia.

This financial aid will be given to doctoral students or post-doctoral researchers who come to the Villa Clythia for the two weeks of the school. The selection will be based on criteria of excellence. The participant will be informed in September about the allocation of this financial aid.
